The Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton and Franklin Counties recognized a handful of the many influential people and companies who donate time, energy and resources to support local youth on Monday, June 3rd, during the Club’s annual Cause for Applause Volunteer Luncheon. The luncheon, which was catered by the Olive Garden and Coca Cola, was held at the Richland Community Center. Award Winners included: John Umbarger, Calvin Dudney and Lynn Tegeler, Community Partners of the Year; Andy Anderson, Commitment to Excellence; Brenda Draper, Helping Hands Award; Carrie Carlson, Rookie of the Year; Chad Baker, Above & Beyond Award; Meghan Trunell, Volunteer of the Year. Special recognition was also given to one elementary-age youth member who exemplifies good moral character while setting an example throughout the year for fellow Boys & Girls Club members. Alexia Estrada, a 5th grader from Emerson Elementary in Pasco, received the honor known as “Kellee’s Kid,” named after the Club’s founding president. The Boys & Girls Club staff also had a surprise in store for the current president, Greg Falk, by presenting him with a Staff Leadership Award. Special thanks was bestowed on the Olive Garden’s Kevin Ivey for generously providing the food for the event. This is the 4th year in a row the Olive Garden has catered Cause for Applause. The restaurant has been a proud and loyal supporter of the Boys & Girls Club, allowing the agency to build relationships with community members and kids through a valuable partnership. |

Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit Bar-B-Que held a soft opening on Friday May 30th and Saturday May 31st for friends and family of restaurant employees. In lieu of paying for meals, guests were asked to make a contribution to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton and Franklin Counties. The restaurant chose the Boys & Girls Club as its charity of choice because of the impact the Club has on more than 3,000 local youth who are Club members. The restaurant’s soft opening allowed wait staff and cooks to “practice” on guests in preparation for its grand opening on Monday, June 2nd.
To celebrate opening to the public, Famous Dave’s presented present a check to the Club from the proceeds raised during Friday and Saturday’s soft opening fund raiser. Boys & Girls Club staff educated patrons as they entered the establishment, and four shifts—two afternoon and two in the evening—generated more than $2,400 for the local Clubs.
Famous Dave’s opens about 3 restaurants a year, and their new location off of Gage Blvd. behind the Columbia Center Mall employs more than 150 people. |
